Whittingham

Whittingham Mental Hospital

Whittingham hospital was opened in 1893, constructed from bricks made on site. The site evolved around 4 phases, the first being St Lukes then St Johns, then Cameron House and finally St Margarets opened in 1914. The hospital was able to house over 3,000 patients, thus giving an idea on the scale of this complex. Whittingham was one of the largest Asylums in the country. In the late 60’s the hospital saw allegations of cruelity to the patients, including a 16 year old girl hanging herself from a shower rail!

The photographs below start with Cameron House, St Johns church, The nurses accommodation block and then the perimeter of St Lukes. St Margaret’s and St Johns have been knocked down and cleared for some reason I cannot discover on the net. Cameron House is in a highly dangerous condition with all roofing materials long gone.

Photograph 107 showing what appears to be a modern semi for staff accommodation. It it the building immediately next to the nurses accommodation. The door was wide open and yet on entering my normally brave wife refused to enter saying she felt a negative presence.

We believe the site is awaiting the wrecking crews for a new housing estate is in the pipeline once the bypass is built to accommodate the extra traffic that would be created.

For further information on the hospital Ken Ashton appears to be the man. He has a site: www.whittinghamhospital.co.uk

Photographs taken using Nikon D2Xs producing a 20MB RAW file (4,288 x 2,848), samples shown are 640 x 425 pixels
