Whittingham Mental Hospital
Whittingham hospital was opened in 1893, constructed from bricks made on site. The site evolved around 4 phases, the first being St Lukes then St Johns, then Cameron House and finally St Margarets opened in 1914. The hospital was able to house over 3,000 patients, thus giving an idea on the scale of this complex. Whittingham was one of the largest Asylums in the country. In the late 60’s the hospital saw allegations of cruelity to the patients, including a 16 year old girl hanging herself from a shower rail!
The photographs below start with Cameron House, St Johns church, The nurses accommodation block and then the perimeter of St Lukes. St Margaret’s and St Johns have been knocked down and cleared for some reason I cannot discover on the net. Cameron House is in a highly dangerous condition with all roofing materials long gone.
