Leominster Canal An attempt was made in the 1790’s to link the River Severn at Stourport with Leominster and Kington. The route involved a couple of tunnels, the 1200 yard Southnet Tunnel collapsed soon after completion apparently taking a couple of boatmans lives with it. We have found the South portal below but have had little luck in finding the north portal.
The 300 yard Putnal Field Tunnel was constructed and an 18 mile long section with 16 locks achieved, but there was no connection to the inland system, and could only serve for coal traffic from the Mamble mines to Leominster.
The later railway was built on part of the canal's course. We have photographed the Teme aqueduct near Gosford from one side with plans to return for the other side. This was originally a 3 arched aqueduct but has partially been destroyed. The Rea aqueduct is situated northeast of Newham Bridge and we have yet to find that.
Searching for canal beds has proved to be somewhat tricky to say the least.
