Llyn Brianne Reservoir
The Llyn Brianne is situated on the river Towy. Built by Wimpey in the late 1960’s from crushed rock and larger boulder rock clay which was mostly crushed on site using local materials. Basically a clay core is covered in crushed rock on either side forming a man made mountain. The dam supplies drinking water to South Wales via the Velindre water treatment plant. The dam is one of the highest of its type in Europe standing at 91 meters (300 feet) high and 274 meters wide.
It has been known for Canoeists using kayaks to risk life and limb by travelling down the 270 meter long overspill seeking thrills.
