Ballingham Tunnel
The photographs that follow are of the Brunel’s broad gauge line from Hereford to Grange Court Junction. The 22.5 mile line was opened in two sections, Grange Court to Hopesbrook opened on the 11th July 1853 and then on the 1st June 1855 the Hopesbrook to Hereford section was celebrated.
Along this 22.5 mile stretch 2,631 yards was in the form of tunnels, Lea was 771, Fawley 540, Ballingham 1210 and the remaining 110 yards for Dinedor.
Sadly Dr Beeching, the chairman of the British Transport System in the 1960's closed the Gloucester to Hereford line on the 2nd November, 1964, thus the line from Hereford to Ross closed entirely.
